REFLECTION
Throughout this semester I believe that I have learnt a lot about teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, I have also learnt a lot about the power we as educators have to impact and improve the educational gaps between Indigenous and non-Ingenious students in Australia.
Developing respectful, positive and productive relationship with the Indigenous people in the communities in which I teach will be a focus for me as a graduate teacher. This will not only assist me with teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, but also teaching non-Indigenous students about Aboriginal culture and issues. Initially I found the prospect of teaching about a culture that I know little about intimidating but now I understand that if I treat the content with respect and source reliable and considerate resources it is possible. Supporting students to engage in a meaningful way with their culture and the school community will be a priority as a graduate teacher, it concerns me when people believe that Indigenous cannot be in harmony with education.
Education is important for every child that enters our classroom or school community, it is our role to find ways to engage them in their learning and combine classroom learning with their cultural education.
